What makes dogs so special and successful?
Research on puppies has exploded in recent years. Faculties have opened puppy cognition labsscientists have probed dogs’ intelligence, behaviour, biology and abilities .
Wynne talked recently with The Washington Post about his publication ,”Dog’s Love: How Your Dog Loves You” This interview was edited for clarity and length.
The Washington Post: Most dog owners are going to think,”Obviously my dog loves me”
Wynne: It is at least worth considering that which on the surface seems to be some thing in our dogs people are delighted to call love could — might not have deserved this title. A: I am a reluctant convert. I was someone who had been resistant to the concept that what seemed to be affection radiating out of our puppies might be . But a combo of having this puppy in my life — who is lying next to me today, Xephos — along with the overwhelming evidence of those research that my pupils and I did, and also the research that all these different individuals have done, it actually all adds up to an irresistible image. I understand that occasionally Xephos just needs dinner. But I am pretty convinced that that’s not the entire image. She does feel that a bond, a link toward me that is as real as every other relationship any other person in my life may feel toward mepersonally.
Q: Anthropomorphism is relied upon in mathematics. How do you analyze dogs’ capacity to enjoy without veering into anthropomorphic land?
Anthropomorphism signifies ascribing human attributes to animals. And surely enjoy is something we understand first through human expertise. However, I believe that different species may have different types of love.
